Congratulations, You’ve Arrived (Now Please Step Into the Void)

Think you’ve finally cracked the code because you checked a box on a list someone else wrote for you? You’ve been sprinting toward a horizon that recedes exactly one inch for every step you take forward, and it’s time to talk about the grandest joke of all: the idea that you are actually going somewhere.

We spend our entire lives obsessed with milestones. We’re told that once we get the degree, the job title, the house, or the "perfect" setup, we will finally descend into a state of permanent, sun-drenched grace. We call it "making it." I call it a well-packaged lie. This is the Arrival Fallacy—the psychological equivalent of treating your life as a messy, inconvenient waiting room for a "then" that promises to be better.

Why are we so terrified of the stillness? Because in the stillness, there is no next goal to hide behind. When the "Arrival" happens and the dopamine spike fades—and it always fades—you are left with the one person you were trying to outrun: yourself. We inherit these narratives of "milestones" because they keep us moving, consuming, and distracted. But self-mastery isn't about reaching the destination; it’s about the uncomfortable clarity found in realizing the destination is a mirage.

If you’re waiting for life to "start" once you reach a certain point, you’ve already missed the opening act. The "unseen forces" shaping you aren't waiting at the finish line; they are the very friction you’re feeling right now. Stop looking for the exit sign and start looking at the walls of the room you're currently standing in. You haven't arrived because there was nowhere to go in the first place.

Do you remember a specific moment when you reached a "big goal" only to feel a strange sense of emptiness or "what now?" afterward? Share your experiences with the arrival fallacy in the comments—let’s dismantle the finish line together.
