There is a peculiar kind of quiet that settles over a person when they realize the world around them was never designed with them in mind. It is not the silence of peace, but the heavy, stifling silence of irrelevance. We often speak of physical accessibility as the end of the conversation, but it is merely the beginning. True exclusion is felt when the very structures of our lives—governmental, financial, and educational—become invisible walls.
Disability is often taken lightly by those who currently move through the world with ease, treated as a distant "other" category. But I find myself asking a question that most choose to ignore: How long do you truly believe you will stay abled?
We walk through life behind a fragile shield of health, forgetting that the boundary between the "abled" and the "disabled" is porous and shifting. You may experience a temporary disability—a broken limb that turns a flight of stairs into a mountain. You may experience the beautiful but physically demanding reality of pregnancy. And, if we are fortunate, we will all experience aging—a slow, inevitable transition where the systems we once mastered begin to master us.
Do you wish to be ignored by a system you were once a vital part of? Whether it is a digital platform that refuses to read your screen, a financial institution with barriers to entry, or a healthcare system that views your needs as a logistical burden, we are all just one event away from irrelevance. From recreational spaces that exclude to educational frameworks that fail to adapt, we are building a future that we may one day be unable to inhabit.
We invest in insurance for our homes and cars, yet we fail to "insure" our future participation in society. Every time we ignore universal design in our government services or societal norms, we are effectively building the prisons that will hold our future selves. Inclusion is not a service for a minority; it is a safeguard for the person you will eventually become.
I invite you to pause here and look within. If your physical, cognitive, or financial world changed tomorrow—whether for a week or for a lifetime—would the systems you built still recognize your value? I would value your reflections and thoughts in the comments on how we can better navigate these digital and physical currents together.
